Rock–McCarran Truckee River Stewardship (North and South Banks): Monthly Community Clean- Ups + Source-Water Education

This project will deliver six monthly community clean‑ups and source‑water education events from April through September 2026 along the Truckee River. Each event follows a consistent, safety‑focused model that integrates on‑the‑ground cleanup, volunteer engagement, and practical water‑quality education.

For each event, staff will coordinate logistics in advance, including site access, volunteer outreach, safety planning, materials preparation, and documentation. On event days, trained staff oversee volunteer check‑in, PPE distribution, safety briefings, and cleanup activities on both riverbanks when conditions allow. Collected waste is staged and properly disposed of.

Each cleanup includes a pop‑up source‑water education station that provides clear, actionable information on trash pathways to the river, stormwater and runoff, pet waste impacts, and year‑round stewardship behaviors. Events conclude with waste tracking, participation totals, photo documentation, and a short volunteer debrief.

By covering both riverbanks and repeating this model monthly, the project reduces trash re‑accumulation, improves durability of results, and promotes equitable stewardship and awareness throughout the river corridor.

TMWA Benefit:

The project is designed to align most directly with Stewardship and Environmental Awareness by delivering hands-on river clean-ups paired with consistent public education relative to water quality and watershed protection. The project also supports watershed protection by removing solid waste from riverbanks and
high-use access points where it can enter the Truckee River during wind and runoff events.

II – Watershed Improvements (supporting): reduces trash and solid waste mobilization to the river corridor; focuses on hotspots and access points.
III – Local Stormwater Improvements (supporting): education and cleanup emphasis on stormdriven transport pathways from urban surfaces to the river.

VI – Stewardship and Environmental Awareness: monthly clean-ups + education stations and messaging.
